Never Ask for Directions

Some always know what north will be
However, that surely isn’t true of me
And, really, what is there I can say
Have I turned the map the right way
Is that next turn to be a left or a right
In finding the way I’m not too bright
But directions I’m not going to ask
My confusion I just have to mask
Admit I’m lost I simply can’t do
For help who would I turn to?
Others may know even less than me
For to keep on guessing is the key
I’d much rather endure cold or heat
Than, as a navigator, admit defeat
Stop and ask for directions you say
That I will never do, there’s no way!

After fumbling for hours
I finally give in and read
the directions. I know, but
it is the way us writers often
do it...just sit down – and start
writing on the fly. I think
some poetry demands it...Free
Verse demands it! Progressive
Jazz demands it! Modern Art
demands it! My wife demands it –
“Read the directions!” My failed
attempt
at baking….

When he goes right when you say left…
His grip, headstrong - he swivels the steering wheel.
When you drive him crazy with questions,
Wondering if the old man’s batty.
If you ask him what was he thinking,
He might tell you he thought that he knew
Where he was turning, therefore
Assuring he’s not crazy at all,
Nor ignoring your directions, nor
Losing his mind. Left inside your brain,
You wouldn’t think he’s right, but he knew
Exactly what he was trying to do.
This answers years of questions —
Didn’t you hear what I said? Are you deaf?
Why don’t you ever do what I say?
He was never following siri’s* directions!
